NOTING THE CHARLOTTE HORNETS

-- For the second time in the month of August, the Hornets enjoyed an open date following the 27-20 win over San Antonio. Beginning with the August 30 date at Jacksonville, the Hornets face a grinding weekly schedule of games without interruption through November 16.

-- Former North Carolina standout Lewis Jolley leads the club in rushing and pass receiving yardage through three games. Jolley, the club's starting fullback, has gained 127 yards on 31 carries and has seven pass receptions for 95 yards. Backfield teammate Don Highsmith ranks second in rushing by only one yard, 126 yards on 57 carries. Highsmith has pulled in nine passes for 86 yards.

-- Defensively, second year linebacker Jere Brown and rookie defensive tackle David Douglas lead the team in tackles with a total of 21 unassisted apiece in three games. Brown opened the season with 10 against San Antonio while Douglas has posted three identical games of seven unassisted tackles per game. Douglas, a 6-2, 245-pounder, bench presses 450 pounds and runs a 4.6 40-yard dash. He and rookie tight end Danny Whyte have been the most pleasant surprises for head coach Bob Gibson and his staff. Douglas started the season as a backup defensive end before being moved to tackle prior to the season opener. He has been starting ever since.

-- Hornets quarterback Tom Sherman currently ranks eighth in the WFL in passing, completing 17 of 34 passes for 275 yards and a touchdown. Southern California's Pat Haden leads the league with 36 completions in 59 attempts for 490 yards, five touchdowns and a completion percentage of 55 percent.

-- As a team. The Hornets rank ninth in the league in total offense, 10th in rushing offense, seventh in passing offense, fourth in total defense, seventh in rushing defense and sixth in passing defense. The club is second in Action Point efficiency and eighth in overall efficiency.
