HORNETS LOOK FORWARD TO HOME APPERANCE

-- After three regular season road trips in four games, the Charlotte Hornets are looking forward to playing before a friendly crowd. "The game this week is one that will probably go down to the wire," head coach Bob Gibson said, "and playing at home will make it tougher on the other team for a change."

Charlotte, once the 0-2 team in the Eastern Division of the WFL, is now the 2-2 team and has climbed to third in the standings. Only Memphis and Birmingham stand ahead of the Hornets. The Grizzlies are 3-1 in four games while Birmingham lines up for week No. 6 with a 3-2 record.

A LOOK AT SOME COMPUTER STATS

--The World Football League in 1975 is developing a computer evaluated system of statistics to give teams and individuals an idea of how they stack up. Through four games, Charlotte boast the WFL's second best defense in terms of total defense. The Hornets defenders have allowed an average of 284.0 yards per game as compared to 264.3 by Memphis. The Hornets rank second in passing defense and fifth in scoring defense.

Offensively. Hornets statistical highlights are spotty. Quarterback Tom Sherman ranks seventh in the league in passing but Charlotte does not have a player in either the individual rushing or individual receiving categories. Don Highsmith ranks eighth in scoring with 22 points on three touchdowns and one Action Point and Robby Reynolds is third in punting with a 40.7 yards per kick average. Larry Shears is one of 18 players with two interceptions.

JOHN GILLIAM MAY PLAY SATURDAY

-- Wide receiver John Gilliam, a premiere NFL All-Pro, may be in the Philadelphia Bell starting lineup Saturday. Gilliam was drafted by the Bell from Chicago when the Winds franchise was revoked.

SEASONAL HIGHLIGHTS: The Hornets have put together two wins in a row after two initial losses on the road. Last week's victory over the Express left the once winless Hornets in a tie for third place in the Eastern Division, only one game behind the division leading Grizzlies.

One of the main reasons for the Hornets' success has been the performance of quarterback Tom Sherman who missed the first two games of the year with a lower back injury. Since his return to the lineup, he has completed 26 of 45 passes for 394 yards and two touchdowns. Against the Express last week, he hit on 9 of 11 aerials.

Don Highsmith is the Hornets' leading rusher with 225 yards in 77 carries. He also leads the team in scoring with 22 points and in receptions with 11.

Rookie tight end Danny Whyte leads the club in receiving yardage with 158 yards in six catches, including a 57-yard game winning catch against the San Antonio Wings. Outside linebacker Jere Brown and rookie defensive tackle David Douglas remain tied for the team lead in tackles with 27 apiece.
